Saints vs. Panthers: Picks, predictions for wild-card matchup

The New Orleans Saints are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2013 and are hosting the Carolina Panthers Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome at 3:40 p.m.

Oddsmakers have the Saints as a 7-point favorite after beating the Panthers twice in the regular season.

Jeff Duncan, Columnist
Saints 31, Panthers 17: There’s a reason the Saints swept the Panthers during the regular season. Carolina simply doesn’t match up with the Saints. The Panthers’ inconsistent, pedestrian passing attack lacks the weaponry to attack the Saints where they are vulnerable defensively. Therefore, I can’t see them keeping pace with Drew Brees and Co. The Saints have averaged 33 points a game against the Panthers in their past seven visits to the Superdome. If bad Cam Newton shows up this week, the Panthers could get run out of the Superdome.

Record: 13-3 overall, 8-8 vs. spread

Larry Holder, Saints columnist
Saints 30, Panthers 23: Ron Rivera admitted after the last time these two teams played that the Panthers prepared as best they could to stop Alvin Kamara, and they couldn’t stop him. Carolina may try to focus in on Kamara. I don’t think it will matter anyway. The Saints match up well against the Panthers on both sides of the ball. New Orleans can’t allow tight end Greg Olsen beat them, though.

Record: 12-4 overall, 6-10 vs. the spread

Herbie Teope, Saints writer
Saints 27, Panthers 20: The Saints opened as 6-point favorites at home and have an opportunity to go 3-0 against the Panthers since the 2017 regular season started. The matchup obviously features two teams that know each other well, but the Saints are the better team. Additionally, the Saints will have cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who did not play in the previous two contests. On to the divisional round.

Regular season record: 13-3 overall, 10-6 vs. spread
